Frequently Asked Questions
Mammography utilizes a low-dose X-ray system to provide insight into the internal structures of the breasts. Also known as a mammogram, this examination plays a crucial role in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.
The decision to undergo a mammogram is based on factors such as your current health status, family history, and other risk factors. Mammograms are recommended both as a screening test for breast cancer and as a diagnostic tool to investigate lumps or other symptoms.
The procedure involves standing in front of a specialized X-ray machine. A technician will gently lower a plastic plate onto one of your breasts, applying pressure to flatten the breast tissues. This compression aids in the detection of tumors or signs of breast cancer.
On the day of the test, you can eat, drink, and take medications. However, avoid wearing body powder, cream, lotion, or deodorant on your chest, as these products may appear on the X-ray.
The pressure from the plates can be uncomfortable or mildly painful for some women, but the compression process is brief. Temporary changes in skin color or mild aching may occur due to compression. After the test, you can resume your regular activities. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out.
